Howard Facey
Howard Anthony Facey was born on September 23, 1951, in Jamaica. At the age of 16, he made the life-altering journey from his homeland to London, joining his mother, who had moved to the UK earlier to work. In Jamaica, Howard had spent his early years with his grandparents, as his mother had come to England before he was old enough to join her. He and his brother made the voyage together, arriving in London at a pivotal time in their lives.
Upon arrival, Howard was struck by the stark differences in his new life. The family lived in a modest home in Wood Green, North London, where they endured the challenges of a basic lifestyle. Without central heating, they relied on gas meters and paraffin heaters to keep warm. However, despite the struggles, Howard recalls his time there fondly, finding solace in the community and his family.
His first job, secured with the help of his mother, was a significant moment in his journey. Working in a factory where parts for airplanes were made, Howard began to understand the work ethic and rhythms of life in the UK. His responsibilities included operating a capstan machine, a job that required precision and focus. He earned £5 for his first week of work, a modest sum that he dutifully shared with his mother. Over time, his earnings grew, and he would later work in various jobs, including furniture fitting and making lady’s shoes alongside his mother.
Howard’s early experiences in London were marked by hard work and an eagerness to adapt. Despite a lack of formal education in the UK, Howard continued to learn and contribute to his community. His passion for tailoring, a skill he developed in Jamaica, stayed with him, and he would later apply it in his various jobs.
His social life also flourished, as he met his future partner at a local party. While his son, now 54 years old, would later face health challenges, Howard reflects with gratitude on the opportunities and family connections he built during those formative years.
Later in life, Howard moved into a facility where he enjoys more comfort and independence. He now has his own room with a new bed and access to his own bathroom. The facility offers him the peace and privacy he never had during his younger years in London. A particularly memorable moment in Howard’s life was meeting Prince Harry, who once visited the facility. Although Howard didn’t take a picture with the prince, he recalls the warmth of their encounter, including a letter the prince later wrote to him.
Reflecting on the changes in his life, Howard has seen the world evolve through significant events like war, the COVID-19 pandemic, and inflation. Yet, through it all, he has remained resilient, finding strength in his community, his work, and his family. Today, Howard’s life is marked by a sense of peace, the comfort of knowing his health is stable, and the enduring support of those he loves.
