Edem

Edem joined Voyage in 2024 after being referred by a family member. Although unsure of what to expect at first, he quickly engaged with many of our programmes and embraced every opportunity. He first became an active participant in both the Tech Ambassadors programme and Aim for Success (A4S), where he explored a range of career pathways.

Through A4S, Edem secured a valuable work-experience placement with Gallagher, a leading insurance and consultancy firm. He also took part in Voyage’s Windrush Elders Projec, an intergenerational heritage initiative that connected young people with Windrush-generation elders to document their stories and learn from their lived experiences.

Improvements & Milestones

  • Edem became a Voyage Ambassador, a leadership role that allows him to inspire and mentor others. For Voyage Voices, Edem chose to focus on the Technology category, specifically addressing the issue of digital inclusion and accessibility and gave valuable feedback on the suitability of workshops for our longer term youth leadership programme. 
  • Quantitative Growth: Edem enjoyed participating in the hands-on tech workshops. He gained hands-on work experience at Gallagher, improving his professional knowledge and workplace skills. 
  • Qualitative Growth: Developed confidence, communication skills, and a deeper appreciation for British history.
  • Recognised for his contributions with two Jack Petchey Awards, celebrating his leadership and commitment.

Challenges Faced

  • Initially, he lacked experience in engaging with professionals and understanding corporate structures. Adjusting to the corporate environment at Gallagher required developing new skills, such as professional communication and adaptability.
  • During the Windrush Project, he had to step out of his comfort zone to conduct interviews with older community members.

Overcoming Challenges

  • Voyage provided mentorship to help Edem navigate the corporate workspace effectively. Support from Gallagher professionals helped him gain confidence in a structured work environment.
  • Through the Tech scheme and the Windrush Project, he developed strong communication and active listening skills, which enhanced his ability to engage in meaningful discussions.

Sustaining Progress

Edem remains engaged with Voyage as a Voyage Ambassador, where he continues to support and mentor younger participants. The skills and experiences he gained through Voyage and work experience will support him in future career and educational opportunities. His achievements, including the Jack Petchey Awards, serve as motivation for continued personal and professional growth.

Future Plans & Aspirations

Edem is considering career opportunities in Engineering. He is exploring further professional development opportunities, apprenticeships and higher education options. He hopes to continue engaging in mentorship roles to support other young people in their journeys.
